MOSCOW, May 29. / TASS /. Most, 75% of the organisms found in the depths of the ocean have unique biological compounds that can be used to obtain new drugs, including cancer. This was announced on Tuesday at a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Director of the FGBI Institute of Marine Biology. AV Zhirmunsky of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei Adrianov.

According to him, Russian scientists in several expeditions, since 2010, have studied deep-water places in the Japanese, Okhotsk, and Bering seas and have received "fantastic results".

"Each expedition gives more than a thousand deep-water species, of which 30-60% are new to science. Describe all of them there are no resources, but each new deep-water species is the source of new unique biologically active compounds. And 75% of all compounds of deep-sea objects have biological activity […] they are very effective compounds, they are used to develop new drugs: antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs", – said Adrianov.

Earlier, the academician noted that the present race is developing between the countries for developing deep-sea resources. And it includes even those that do not have large marine areas in their jurisdiction.
