IRKUTSK, May 16. / TASS /. A consortium of scientists from the Irkutsk region and Buryatia sent a draft to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to create a digital monitoring center for Lake Baikal, the press service of the Irkutsk Scientific Center (INC) of the SB RAS said on Wednesday.
"At the initiative of the Irkutsk academic institutes of the SB RAS, a project for the creation of a class center "megascay" on the study of Baikal and the Baikal natural territory on the basis of new scientific approaches to the organization of integrated monitoring <…>. The creation of such a center will be a new step for studying the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal", – quoted the press service of the scientific leader of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS, Igor Bychkov.
It is assumed that the project of Siberian scientists will allow the use of biosensorics, geodynamics, hydrochemistry, artificial intelligence, mathematical and information modeling for studying the lake. The system will record virtually all the changes around the unique lake, including the state of water, atmosphere, the earth’s crust, geomagnetic field and ecosystem. The data will be stored in a single data center.
"Application of the most advanced technologies for processing disparate interdisciplinary data, including technologies big data, will allow scientists to significantly improve the quality of studying the unique object of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. In addition, the researchers will be able to create new forecast models for assessing possible changes in the ecosystems of Lake Baikal", – noted in the SB RAS.
The issue of integrated environmental monitoring is extremely acute in Baikal, as scientists record individual changes in the ecosystem of the lake, but do not have a complete picture for a comprehensive assessment of its condition. Earlier it was also reported that the governor of the Irkutsk region Sergei Levchenko instructed the regional government in 2018 to develop a program for the implementation of the project "Digital Baikal", which will bring together in a single digital database the data of all scientific research of Baikal.
