Scientists in the course of research succeeded in revealing the existence of a connection between the shape of galaxies and their age. The corresponding conclusions are made by astronomers from Australia, representing Sydney University.
Scientists have studied hundreds of galaxies, and it turned out that those of them that are filled with relatively young stars are flat. However, the older the stars become, the more noticeable the “rounding” of their galaxies. Before this correlation was noted with extreme cases, when it came to the youngest galaxies or the most ancient ones. A new study allows us to conclude that it remains relevant for all other situations.
In their conclusions, the authors refer to the materials of the large-scale review of SAMI Galaxy Survey. In sum, the researchers had to study more than 840 different galaxies. The conclusions are based on the fact that young galaxies are highly elliptical and exhibit a flat form. With age, their stars are more chaotic in their movements, while the galaxies themselves are becoming more spherical.
