To get a lot of money, drive a cool car and be like Solo or Noone is a dream of many young people. In fact, success was only a small part of them. In an interview with “Kanobu” founder of cyber Academy funbo Nicholas’s Voice told about the major mistakes made by novice players, and shared experiences and advice on the investment in eSports startups.

— What funbo?

— We launched funbo in December 2017. Initially dealt with the organization of games with competitive players. We have seen that most meanwhile plays the rank of 2000 – 3000 MMR, but would like to play with real professionals, to compete with them or just chat, get to know their mistakes and to ask questions. Obviously, in normal ranked games, gamers with a low rank would never have caught about players, we’re the barrier trying to break. By March of this year, we organized matches involving casual players and competitive players.

However, it was found that the participants expected more from these games. Gamers wanted for one game to improve their skills, learn useful chips and their mistakes, and it provided that the gamers were busy with their game, especially for his teammates weren’t.

Therefore, our users felt held games are not very useful, so how much to pump your skill and knowledge they could not. In March, we thought about changing the format. We asked a few hundred gamers who are addicted to cybersport disciplines and found that about 60% of them would like to get into eSports, but this works only units. Using the experience of professionals and people from the industry of eSports, we decided to create a platform where the player with any skill with the appropriate level of responsibility and motivation, could begin his career in eSports, or at least significantly upgrade your skill.

— How this platform works and helps to develop the skill and skill of the players?

— The first step in our service is educational. Together with a professional trainer, we developed a course that helps players to raise the individual skill and a better understanding of Dota 2. Lectures have come in the form of online streams with a teacher, who at the end of each lesson provides practical activities which help to fix the passed themes. It is understood that in order to play in tournaments and win, every player on the team needs to have excellent micro and macro game. It needs to perfectly know the basics of Dota 2 and its nuances, to communicate with your teammates, quickly and correctly to make decisions.

It all yourself is very difficult to master. As in any other sports discipline, you need to spend much time on self-education — to watch stream, analyze the matches, read forums and guides. We accumulated the necessary material, it is well structured and gathered in the “Educational stage”.

The next step — command step. It’s designed for experienced players with high understanding of Dota 2 and micro game. At this stage, we have developed special courses for the team, the draft and training. Conduct training to be a professional trainer with experience in the eSports teams. Command the stage ready for bands and individual players without a team we will help her to collect from our students and determine the role of each team mate. The teams at the command stage, we will prepare for the first tournaments and performances, to help with management and also monitor their progress and reward the best. The last step is the selection of the most promising bands. We will promote them on the already semi-professional and professional tournaments, and to help with the organization of the training process, the search for sponsors and partners.

— What players and coaches were able to attract to the project and how they affect students?

Now we begin the first month of the educational stage. It was developed by and is the coach of eSports organizations Double Dimension — Matrim. He is very responsible approach to the course design: well-structured material, added many examples from his own experience and that of other players. As mentioned earlier, the course is in format, online stream, and at the end of each lesson, the trainer communicates with students and answers their questions. We also work with Ivan Karpov — eSports Manager, who has extensive experience working with professional teams. He gives advice on the development of our project, and also involved in the management, involvement of gamers and organizations. Also we are preparing courses with competitive players, with whom we have worked previously, but they will be able to tell after the official announcement.

— Why are you so sure that your project will help the players to improve the game?

Because we believe that as in all sports the help of experienced mentors is a key factor affecting the development of athletes.

I don’t think, for example, in swimming there are Champions who have learned to swim themselves. Just as in any eSports title is a mistake to assume that if you can’t reach the professional level, then you no one will be able to help.

Our courses are developed by people with lots of experience in eSports. They know what to give and in what order. Another thing is that our students also have a responsibility to approach the classroom and not assume that they already know it all.

— Were there cases when a player really pumped after your courses should appear in eSports?

Yet it’s too soon to talk about our students that came to eSports. We launched the first stream only in mid-June. Believe it will take about six months to go to be able to summarize. Besides, there are people who just want to learn to play better and they have no desire to play professionally. However, we constantly collect feedback from our students and get positive feedback. When you start something new, there is always the fear that the project won’t like it, will be useless and will not drop your audiences. We anxiously waited for our first lesson and was relieved at the end, seeing the chat thanks to our coach.

— Your audience is only beginners?

— We are doing as beginners from 500 to 2000 MMR, and more experienced with more than 5000 MMR. They all have in common, what they want to learn to play better and prepare for the game in the team’s performance in tournaments.

The material we provide, it is difficult to learn in public, his need to learn either by videos or stream, or work out with a more experienced player.

Because normal games are quite different from what happens in the competitive “DotA”, especially at lower ranks. We can say that in our courses, anyone can find something useful, but the less rank and less experience of playing in tournaments, the more useful it will be for our classes.

— How many need to pass courses to start to play better? And what of the cost?

— After the first class our students will find useful pieces that try to introduce in their games. But the more experienced the player is, the less chips he will learn.

Players who have more than 6000 MMR is unlikely that a training course would be helpful. They can be prepared for tournaments.

One session costs from 124 rubles. For example, in our course c Metronom in the month of 8 classes, that is, out of 990 per month, plus practical exercises, additional teaching material, internal tournaments and sweepstakes. In the command phase will be from 4 to 8 lessons (490 — 990), as well as assistance in the organization of teams and management. Best our formulations will be free of charge. We will certainly highlight these to help players in the early eSports career.

— Many novice businessmen are afraid to look at eSports as an opportunity to implement their ideas. So is it worth to invest in eSports?

— I think that you should invest in what you understand. Creating a good, quality product in almost any industry, you can earn on it. However, to do this well and efficiently, you need industry to be interested in and understood. To start is to determine the areas in which you know and then think what ideas they can implement.

— How to run an eSports startup in CIS with no experience and money?

Now there are so many possibilities to implement their ideas. For example, in universities there are programs of support of innovative projects, where my partner and friend Ivan by Borodinym launched our project (ITMO University, business accelerator Future Technologies). There are also state programs that help to develop their projects — the same FRII (Foundation for Internet Development Initiatives) and others. Using these programs, you can test your ideas to understand what they actually do business, to find people to make the first sale and absolutely free. However, for all of you out there will not do. There only will tell you where you can find clients, how to attract how to start a promotional campaign and make the first version of your product, business plan and might introduce you to experienced people (experts from industry) that will help advice you with your project. In General, they will share their experience with you, and all you need to do will be yourself.

You need to be prepared for the fact that a few months you will be working around the clock and without pay, but with the prospect to create something useful for people.

— What you need to know and be able to not go broke on this startup?

— You need to be good to tell about your product to attract people to the team and to be able to interest experts from the industry who could give valuable advice on development. Also it is necessary to conduct surveys of its users. You have to understand what their needs and concerns as you can to help them in solving their problems and why they should go to you.

A lot depends on good advertising and PR, no matter how cool that you use the product. If nobody knows, then you will probably have to close down.

Another very important quality of a founder is the ability to not give up. Often you and your team will seem that nothing will come, nothing you do for a living. In such moments it is necessary not to despair and to look for possible development options.

— Many people dream to get into eSports, but it’s only a few succeed. The main problem of the players, their laziness?

In addition to eSports, I am very much engaged in the usual sports, especially athletics. In my experience a huge role in the development of the athlete plays the coach, on their own any success, classic sports to achieve the almost impossible.

But computer sports are almost all independently, I think that they does not need any help and they may be able to achieve success and master the game, which is actually incredibly complex.

The second point — attitude. Many people play for fun, nobody wants after the match to sit and to revise it, analyzing errors. Also, many believe that they are hampered to achieve the victory of their team, and they’re absolutely not to blame in losing games, refusing to acknowledge that they themselves have made many stupid actions.
