The past “main Honor”, in essence, canceled the flagship smartphones under the brand Huawei. Both Honor 8 and Honor 9 were not much different from Huawei P9 and Huawei P10 in terms of their characteristics and user experience, respectively, while they had, perhaps, even more attractive design and cost one-third cheaper. They invariably became hits, but undermined the sales of their fellows.
This year the situation is the same, but at the same time different. Honor 10 really really repeats Huawei P20: the same hardware platform, the same key chips (artificial intelligence, frameless display with a cutout) and even about the same, with small differences, design. But this year the main smartphone of Huawei is P20 Pro, which differs not just with a larger display, as usual, but with a completely different – and absolutely unique – camera. So this time the Chinese did not cut their wings. Only its truncated version.
Another fun tradition associated with Honor is the “double” announcement of smartphones coming out under this brand. They invariably appear first in China – and then, as if the whole world did not notice it (really, China is like another planet) – they are already being announced in Europe. The same thing happened with Honor 10 – 18 April, he was introduced in the Middle Kingdom, and now, on May 15, we talk more about this smartphone in connection with his official announcement in London.

Design Honor 10 I would like to call a collection of key fashion trends in 2018 – here you and the full-screen display with a “monoble”, and a mirror back panel with metal faces – but stumble on the mini-jack. Today it simply does not have to be in self-respecting “cool” smartphones (at least that’s how manufacturers think), but here it is. Yes, Huawei for this purpose threw out moisture protection from the list of advantages of the smartphone, these things have become mutually exclusive lately.
The main thing that Honor 10 adopted from his older brother is color solutions. In addition to the standard black version, there will also be a cute blue-gray and two impressive gradients. They are difficult to describe in words – it is better to look at the photo.
The one that was able to see live, shimmers with shades of blue and violet – to be honest, in terms of color, nothing is more beautiful than Honor 10 and Huawei P20 / P20 Pro is simply not there today. Although here for the amateur – for someone the most beautiful color of the phone is still black.
The front panel is covered with a single piece of glass – in this, at first glance, there is nothing unusual, now everyone does it. But behind the first glance follows the second – and then you notice that under the glass is hidden and the key “Home” with a fingerprint scanner built into it! No, this is not the same revolutionary solution to which both Apple and Samsung are stretching, and Vivo has already come.
This is an ultrasonic sensor that is simply not tactile. It occupies its rightful place under the display, and for it the frame is specially expanded. It is relatively comfortable to use, even without an easily detectable edge, although on the back panel the scanner would still be more appropriate – I’m not tired of talking about it.
The speaker, located in the cutout in the middle of the status screen, got an oval shape instead of a round one. The camera block, slightly protruding above the case, is horizontal and not vertical, and the inscription “Leica” is replaced by a more modest “AI Camera” – the license to use the German brand on Honor does not apply. On this external differences from the P20, in fact, end. But there are tactile differences – Honor 10 is much easier. And that’s why it feels like a smartphone is more compact, although it’s not so – they have almost identical dimensions.
Moreover, Honor 10 has even a slightly larger display – instead of 5.8 inches there is 5.84 inches. It sounds a little ironic, but it’s a fact. The resolution also differs – instead of 2244 × 1080 points, the standard for today is 2280 × 1080. The aspect ratio is approximately 19: 9. Used LCD technology, the matrix – IPS.
It would be logical to assume that the camera here will be the same as in Huawei P20, with some cosmetic changes like the missing optical stabilizer, but it’s not. Yes, the stabilizer did not become, but the module is different. Honor 10 uses the same dual circuit with monochrome and RGB-sensors, but their resolution is 24 and 16 megapixels respectively. The first, I take the courage to guess, does not differ from the BW-sensor, which is installed in the P20 Pro. But the second before that, we did not meet with Huawei. In pair with it the optics with aperture ƒ / 1,8 works. The system gives the possibility of a double hybrid zoom, improves the dynamic range and has good abilities when shooting in the dark.
The main feature of the camera – here Huawei insists – is artificial intelligence. The number of available object recognition scenarios in the frame is expanded: now there are more than twenty. Whether their work has improved and whether it is possible to disable the work of artificial “intelligence” – we will certainly investigate more thoroughly when testing the gadget in full.
The front camera is the same as the P20 or P20 Pro, 24 megapixels, there is no autofocus or flash. Nevertheless, you can count on a very decent quality of shooting.
The hardware platform is the eight-core SoC Kirin 970 with a dedicated module responsible for working with neural computing. For the first time it “lit up” even in Huawei Mate 10, in the review of which we talked about it in detail and talked. The battery is installed quite capacious – at 3400 mAh; there is the ability to quickly charge using the USB port Type-C. Developers promise full charge for 80 minutes.
The wireless capabilities are extensive: the modem works with LTE networks, providing a maximum data reception speed of up to 400 Mbps (first, it’s true, you need to find a network that is capable of this), Bluetooth version 4.2 supports the aptX HD standard, Wi-Fi dual band 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac), there is both NFC and infrared.
Honor 10 is running Android 8.1 Oreo with the EMUI 8.0 shell. As we have already got used, in Honor for the Russian market there will be pre-installed various local services – from some applications of “Yandex” to “Sberbank. Online.”
There will be two versions of Honor 10, which differ in the amount of internal memory. Operative they have the same – 4 GB, but the non-volatile – or 64, or 128 GB. And in this case, the choice is really critical – “fix” the shortage of the memory card is impossible, no slot is provided for it.
At the time of writing, only Honor 10 domestic prices for China were available: 2,599 yuan for the 64 GB version and 2,999 yuan for the 128 GB version. When recalculating for the current exchange rate, we get approximately 26 and 30 thousand rubles, respectively. Quite an expected “fork”: both Honor 8 and Honor 9 were sold at the start for the same money – and invariably held very high sales positions. Everything says that the situation with Honor 10 will be repeated.
About the tactics of Huawei when creating the flagship smartphones of the Honor series, I wrote in the preliminary review right from the event – the company takes its top machine, submitted about six months before the key announcement of the subbrand, packs it in a new wrapper, slightly (slightly) changes its characteristics and sells for a third cheaper. Voila – a ready-made hit! This worked with last year’s Honor 8, which grew out of Huawei P9, it also works with Honor 9 – the actual result of Huawei P10 restyling.
At the same time, Honor 9 inherits its predecessor in its style – the Chinese did not fundamentally change the design, so we are dealing with one more gadget shining and glowing in the light. Unless on the front panel there was a key with a fingerprint scanner, the dimensions slightly changed, and the back cover got rounded at the edges – now, they do not want it, the designers will come to compare with the Xiaomi Mi6. Well, this is the most direct competitor for the new Honor, a head-on collision with it can not be avoided.
If you ignore the design, then, perhaps, the only difference from Huawei P10, which catches your eye – the missing references to Leica as a partner in the development of the camera. At the same time, the characteristics of the camera remained unchanged: a dual module with a RGB sensor of 13 megapixels and a monochrome of 20. Let’s see how well it manifests itself without the (visible) influence of Leica. Well, we’ll check other features of the smartphone, of course.

|Honor 9 – information about the filling according to the CPU-Z application data||
In the previous flagship of the family, Honor 8, the designers managed to find a special style, their own, unique face for the smartphone – albeit at the price of the fact that the case easily scratched and splattered. But now, when the phones become almost indistinguishable from each other, especially in the middle and budget segments (the flagships still stand out), the dignity of this approach outweighs the shortcomings. This directly confirmed the sale of the G8, and indirectly – that a similar approach was chosen by the Taiwanese HTC for its new U series. With the same mirror gloss.
|The most spectacular Honor 9, blue|
Honor 9 – the most that neither is a direct heir to his ancestor, and this manifests itself in everything. Both the front surface and the back cover are covered with glass, which effectively reflects light – and perfectly collects fingerprints. Sidewalls are made of metal. In fact, it’s really cool the smartphone looks only in photos, in the window and in the first minutes after unpacking; then it is desirable to hide it in the bumper cover that comes with it – and relax. But even in this form, Honor 9 retains its individuality.
|Black Honor 9|
Color solutions are three: blue, gray and black, and the fourth, gold, is sold so far exclusively in China. Perhaps in the future there will be other versions – albeit limited edition.
The Honor 9 is slightly larger, thicker and heavier than the Huawei P10, which is unusual for the “younger” model. Usually older smartphones, on the contrary, look more solid. Part of it happened due to the display – here its diagonal is more by 0.05 inches (this is not a typo!). Partly – because of the design arbitrariness, technically the devices are very similar. For example, the capacity of the batteries used in these smartphones is the same: 3200 mAh.
Honor 9, rear panel: two main camera lens, dual LED flash, laser assist auto-focus assistant
From Honor 8 and its main competitor, Xiaomi Mi6, the “nine” is almost the same in size. It is convenient for her to use one hand, she perfectly hides in her pocket – this is a convenient device in all respects. Except one – if you ignore the above remark on the case-bumper, then Honor 9 will be a very slippery smartphone, which also strives to fly out of hand and go on a fateful date with the floor or the pavement. And the protection against the fall of the device, alas, there is no. Similar in recent times can boast only special tubes for travelers or smartphones Moto series Force. Also, there is no novelty and protection from dust and moisture – this is a little more sad, although it is also typical for the segment “up to 30 thousand rubles.”
Honor 9, upper edge: IR sensor and microphone
Honor 9, the bottom face: USB port Type-C, another microphone, speaker grille and mini-jack
Identical and layout of devices. Under the screen is the Home button with a built-in fingerprint scanner, on each side of it are located touch navigation keys (this saves space on a relatively small, by modern standards, display). The physical keys for turning on and adjusting the volume, interfaces are all in their usual places.
Honor 9, the left side: a slot for SIM cards and / or a memory card
Honor 9, the right side: the keys to turn on and adjust the volume
No surprises, as Thom Yorke sang – unless the infrared port on the upper edge of someone might surprise, but he was back in the last year and was even among the Honor 8. The camera block, by the way, does not stand out body, like its predecessor.
The fingerprint reader is located in the button on the front panel – on the one hand, cheers as in the iPhone. On the other hand, it is generally less convenient than it used to be. The position of the fingers when pressing the button located on the rear panel is much more natural than the one in which we need to touch the front key. The danger of dropping the smartphone is increasing. However, in many respects this is a matter of habit.
The scanner is capacitive, it works very quickly, but is sensitive to microdamages of the skin of the finger. With it, you can unlock the device, confirm payments (there is NFC, and the ability to use Android Pay), control the camera, respond to calls and turn off the alarm clock. He also reacts not only to a simple touch, but also to the fact when the user spends it with his finger – this movement can open the notification panel.
The operating system is Android 7.0 Nougat, covered by EMUI 5.1. There are no special features of the shell in the “technical” plan. A feature of Honor is the large software integration of devices into the environment. In particular, Russian Honor 9 “out of the box” received a search for “Yandex” (along with Google), Sberbank application and navigation 2GIS. As far as it’s valuable, decide for yourself.
The shell itself works very quickly and does not cause irritation – Huawei after a not very successful beginning with its EMUI gradually adapted and makes an excellent software environment.
Huawei leaves AMOLED-matrix high-resolution for special versions of its smartphones (like P10 Plus or not sold in Russia Mate 9 Porsche Design). In Honor 9 nothing surprises: IPS (LPTS) with a diagonal of 5.15 inches and a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. We must admit that the balance of size and resolution is observed very well – you can not see any “roughness” of the picture, for about five-inch displays Full HD is more than enough. The pixel density is 423 ppi. Not the limit, of course, but I recall that the standard Retina, for example, provides a density of 300-320 ppi.
The unexpected problem of P10 with oleophobic coating in this case was avoided – Honor 9 very well “fights” with fingerprints and some tracks, erasing them from the screen is quite simple. Viewing angles are free – in contrast, the contrast decreases, but color is not distorted. It is possible (with moderate convenience) to use a smartphone and in gloves – this requires the inclusion of a special mode in the settings.
In the sun, the screen behaves normally, but not brilliantly. Measured instrumentally, the maximum brightness is 449 cd / m2. This is the standard for Huawei smartphones, but compared to what Xiaomi Mi6 gives us, it looks weak. This is confirmed by the sensations of work: to see something on the display of the gadget under the sun, of course, does not constitute problems, but the picture fades, gray.
Contrast is also average – 1211: 1. The minimum luminance of the black field is 0.3 cd / m2. Quite normal indicators for a modern IPS-display, used in a mobile device. For real black, you have to go to OLED panels. But the Chinese managed to avoid the failure.
Honor 9, gamma. Yellow line – indicators Honor, dotted – the reference scale
Honor 9, color temperature. The blue line is Honor, the dotted line is the reference temperature
The display is adjusted relatively well. The average gamma is 2.30, the behavior of the curves can be seen in the graph above. The default color temperature is, of course, higher than the standard – ranging from 8000 to 9,500 K (mostly around 8500 K) – it is commonly assumed that users like cold shades, even if the picture does not look like the author intended it. But if you want, you can podrikhtovat the temperature for your own needs – such an option is in the settings.
Honor 9, color coverage. The gray triangle is the coverage of sRGB, the white triangle is o
